On the home front, the 1995 Beijing Conference on Women has had a major impact on gender relations in The Gambia. In other words, women in the poorer parts of the world lag behind not only their male counterparts in the same region, but also their sisters in the wealthier and more developed parts of the world. It is important to note at this point that the women of the world are not a homogeneous group and the above gains and constraints are, consequently, not equally shared. Lack of genuine awareness and commitment to gender issues at all level, inadequate financial and technical resources, negative attitudes towards the empowerment of women and structural inadequacies at the macro decision making level stand out as the fundamental barriers. However, many obstacles remain in the way of true gender equality. Women the world over have made tremendous strides in both the traditional and the non traditional spheres- for example, in science and technology, politics, business and finance, health and education culture and the arts. Today, Madam Chairperson, we are here in New York to address and renew that globally agreed contract and clearly map out, articulate and ascertain which critical areas of concern or provisions have been met or fulfilled and if not to clearly state why to enable us come up unfailingly, with concrete commitments and strategies for the advancement of the world's females being half of society. Please allow me to take this opportunity on behalf of the Gambian delegation to congratulate you on your election as Chairperson of this special session.įive years after Beijing, we are gathered here today to take stock of our achievements, and reflect on our constraints and challenges as we map the way towards a world free of gender inequality, underdevelopment and conflict.įive years ago in Beijing, China, the World Community signed a contract with half of humanity: Women, in the form of the global platform for action with its twelve critical areas of concern being the provisions encapsulated in that contractual agreement.
